The Island of Arran

Scotland in Miniature

Among all the islands of Scotland, Arran is unique. It is often referred to as  ‘Scotland in Miniature’ and that is an apt nickname. The hills in the north of Arran are reminiscent of the high mountains of Scotland’s west coast while to the south, gentle hills with forests and farms speak of the rolling border country. It even has a couple of outlying islands of its own.

All Scotland is here.

Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island enjoys a remarkable climate, bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream while at the same time sheltered from Atlantic storms by the Kintyre peninsula. It has long been a popular holiday destination and there are good quality hotels and guest houses as well as houses and cottages available to rent for visitors who prefer a self catering break. Outdoor pursuits are a major attraction and there are long distance footpaths, off road cycle routes and an almost infinite variety of  paths in and through the hills, from the well trodden to the almost secret. For those seeking more leisurely pursuits Arran boasts two internationally renowned distilleries each with a restaurant, cafe and a shop.
